Gently frying onions before adding them to the minced beef, really adds the flavour of your burger and the thyme brings a nice freshness to the recipe. Season the meat well and fry until there is some caramelisation. With plenty of lettuce and cheese topped off with Ballymaloe Original Relish, you’ve got the perfect burger.


  • 15g butter
  • 450g minced beef
  • 110g onions (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp Ballymaloe Original Relish
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (chopped)
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1 free-range egg (beaten)
  • 55g flour (seasoned)
  • Olive oil for frying
  • Toasted burger buns
  • Lettuce
  • Cheese shavings
  • Extra Ballymaloe Original Relish

Dietary Suitability


  1. Melt the butter in a pan, add the onions, cover and sweat until soft
  2. Allow to cool and then mix in a bowl with all the other ingredients
  3. Cook a little of the mixture in a pan and taste to check seasoning
  4. Shape into burgers and toss in seasoned flour, patting off any excess
  5. Lightly coat each burger in olive oil
  6. Fry at a medium heat, turning as required until fully cooked
  7. Serve on a toasted bun with cheese shavings, lettuce and a dollop of Ballymaloe Original Relish.
